The Singapore Dream
We have heard of the American Dream but does Singapore has a Singaporean Dream?
Many people feel that it is impossible to have a Singapore Dream. Over the years, things have move tremendously fast for us in Singapore. One of the more important things that have impacted Singapore is the employment market.
In order to save cost and to boost the company's competitive edge and earnings, firms in Singapore are cutting jobs. Many manufacturing plants are closing down to move to lower cost regions, i.e. our neighbouring countries, such as China, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, just to name a few, to set up their manufacturing plants.
As we in Singapore are progressing rather at a break neck pace, our neighbouring countries are also keeping pace with us. They are building bigger airports, newer seaports with the latest technology, new technology parks to compete with us and to attract more overseas investments. As a result, we are facing with unemployment problem and many people are facing with a difficult task of getting themselves gainfully employed. This is particularly so with those who are age 45 years old and older. Cost are rising at an alarming fast pace e.g. health care cost are rising, education cost going at 6% annually.....
So we in Singapore right now are faced with some major important concerns:
1. Would their children lead better lives compared to the people of their generation i.e. some 20 or 30 years down the road?
2. How can we cope the ever changing uncertainties in future?
3. How do they try to maintain their sanity, happiness and optimism in the midst of the global change?
In view of such development, I believe our people need to change their current mindset and look towards to seek solutions on how to cope with such a change.
From the financial point view, we need to look for ways to accumulating wealth and to build our own economic castle. We need to accept that there is no iron rice bowl in the current employment market, especially those who are employed by the State. We cannot totally depend on the government's compulsory retirement plan known as "Central Provident Fund" for our future retirement needs. We must learn to protect ourselves from long term unemployment and hence reduce the amount of stress from our daily living.
Therefore, in essence, the process of saving and investing for our future is in our own hands. The State has made known to the population that we are responsible for our own welfare and there are no handouts - do not expect any or the less to say no free lunches.
Looking after ourselves could be like planting a money tree ourselves. A tree can be a powerful symbol of our success and wealth. Every season, that money tree will bear fruits for us and can protect us from the scotching sun (sunny days all round in Singapore. Temperature can go up to 33oC and more) by offering some shade. But we require patience to see that money tree to grow. We require years of hard work, diligence as we are required to water that plant and wait for it to produce fruits. We must also learn to build more money trees along the way and that will also be dependent on the number of quality seeds we are able to save and plant in our farm.
Trees would need to thrive on good soil conditions and the location of the farm where we plant the seeds. We need to plant them with great tender loving care and applying a good liberal dosage of the right type of fertilizer. This is an analogy of our investing a great deal of time to study the different techniques of investment to generate our wealth over long term. Ultimately, it is "what you reap what you sow". We cannot dependent on our lucky stars for our lifetime investments. Nothing must be left to chance. It is the discipline, hard work, personal sacrifice and some gut feelings that will help us to muster our financial independence.
So we need to plan so that we will be able to address the following challenges -
1. What are the biggest challenges we face in Singapore?
2. What kind of mindset changes should we adopt to accumulate wealth for our future?
3. What are the best investments for rookie investors?
4. Apart from money, how can we to find peace, happiness and harmony in such a tumultuous time in the heart of Singapore?
These are the issues we will face and so we do not want to waste time to plant our money tree and fight to reclaim our SINGAPORE DREAM.
